Can life cause death?
Hebrews 2:14, 15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Jesus) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death; that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Who has the power of death? The Devil. I’ll ask again, who has the power of death? The Devil.
John 10:10 (Jesus is speaking) The thief comes not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they (who believe on me) might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
On one side….kills.!! On the other…..life more abundantly.!! The one is juxtaposed with the other. No overlap!
I John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
No darkness at all!!
I Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
Death…..is an enemy (of God) and shall be destroyed. How, then, can God cause death?
Genesis 2:16, 17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying; Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die.
God warned man to not do that thing which would cause him to die. See, God is against death.
John 8:44a (Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees) You are of your father the devil; and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him…….
The devil is responsible for death from the very beginning…..when he pushed Cain to kill his brother Abel.
I John 4:8 He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The greatest of the devils works is death. It is the last enemy that shall be destroyed, which is made possible by the work of Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God…..sent into this world for that very purpose.
And how did Jesus destroy the greatest of all the devil’s works? What is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but victory over death?
I Corinthians 15:22-26 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order; Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. Then comes the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he has put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
Death is an enemy of God. It is the weapon of the devil, God’s enemy. Jesus Christ, the Son of God came to destroy the devil and his works, the greatest of which is death.
You may ask, “What about the Old Testament, where God had Saul kill all the Amalakites, or the 400 prophets of Baal that God had Elijah kill,” for instance? Or, “What about the wrath of God, when 1/3 of the inhabitants of the earth are killed?”
Those are good questions….which we’ll begin to answer in the followup study Does God Kill …. A More Thorough Response
