Truth is the way life has been designed to work, by God.
Reality is what actually is at work ….. in your life, or in others.
Truth is never stagnant. It is alive, it flexes, it manifests in many different ways. Reality does not necessarily possess some or any of these qualities.
Let’s go back and see, then, what God’s original will was. Let’s see what truth has always been, how creation was designed to work.
The truth of God is set forth in Genesis 1:27,28.
Genesis 1:27,28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.
I can see 7 distinct aspects of the truth of God, as set forth in these 2 verses.
1) Man was given the image of God ….. in short, man had the very life and nature of God Himself, with open, unlimited access to Him.
2) Mankind was created to be male and female (not male and male…..not female and female)…..this will continue in the new heaven and new earth.
3) Man was blessed by God. (blessing = that which adds, enriches, edifies…….cursing = that which subtracts, impoverishes, destroys)….mankind’s life was to be continually enriched by God Himself.
4) Man was fruitful…..more than just reproducing other similar physical beings, this fruitfulness is a result of God’s blessings (see #3) in man’s life.
5) Man multiplied and replenished (filled) the earth…..with more of his kind, by enjoying the truth of #2.
6) Man was to subdue the earth (all physical creation). He was not to do this by himself, but in communion with others and God.
7) Man had dominion over (dominated) all other living things.
Numbers 1 – 7 are truth.
The deception of Satan turned numbers 1 – 7 into a lie.
Jesus Christ caused numbers 1 – 7 to be true once again.
These aspects of truth all work hand in hand. For example, the dominion man was given (#7) over all other living things worked in conjunction with the fruitfulness(#4) man was to have. The fruitfulness spoken of (#4) is caused by the blessing of God (#3). In any situation we are meant to come out richer than when we went in. Richer in understanding, in knowledge, in experience. Richer in the experience of Christ.
Now we know what truth is. Let’s take a look at reality.
a) I walk into the room and see my 5 year old child pounding a nail into a board, using a computer. “Why?” I ask him. “Because it works,” he answers.
b) My son is now 10, and I see him playing catch with a friend, using that same computer.
c) Now he’s 12, and I come home and he complains that the land line phone is down, and he has no way to communicate with his friend, who lives across town.
So I show him the computer, and how to use it.
“Oh,” he says, “I can type out a letter, print it, and mail it to him.”
d) Later on, I show him e-mail. “Wow,” he thinks.
e) Then, I show him Instant Messenging.
f) Then, later, I show him Skype. Now he can have his friend right there in the room with him, even though he lives across town.
The above examples may seem stupid, but is it any less stupid to allow destructive thoughts and/or feelings into your life as truth, simply because they’re real?
#a is reality, but it is not truth.
#b is reality, but it is not truth.
Why does he use the computer for things it was not intended? Why does he not use the things which are intended for pounding nails (hammer), for playing catch (a ball)?
# c-f are truth. As our knowledge grows, we’re able to do more. There is an increase in efficiency, power, result.
Why do we think, simply because we have thoughts, strong feelings, passions, and/or ways of doing things, that they are truth?
Do they fit the category of the truth of God (#’s 1-7 above)?
Why would we, for example, use anger to try and resolve a situation, when in truth, it only makes the situation worse? Why do we argue, when arguing does not add to our experience of life?
Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions (pathos – passions, strong emotions) of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Being oppressed by the devil, via thoughts and/or strong emotions, is real, but is not truth.
John 10:10 The thief comes not but for to steal and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they (who believe on me) might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
You can tell where a thought comes from, by where it wants to take you.
How do we allow for truth to become our reality? Ask yourself, “What will add to this situation? Where is the blessing of God?”
Ephesians 6:14a Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, ….
The first piece of the armor of God, which is provided by God in order for us to defeat Satan, is truth, and with it we are to gird our loins. The image is of a man of the East, rising to do some work, who would have to cinch his robe about him so that it would not get in his way. We gird the loins of our minds, of our thoughts, with truth, in making any decision, any reasoning, doing any planning, making any judgments or determinations.
Do not let your emotions gird your thoughts, for they can be deceitful. Rather, allow the spirit of Christ to bring the truth of God into your decision making, your planning, your judging and determining.
Did someone wrong you? The truth will guide you into true, fruitful domination of that event. Do you have a desire to get married? Well, now you know the truth ….. that is a Godly desire! And guess who will help you find a good mate? God! With any situation, no matter how challenging, chaotic, defeating, devilish…..God can and will show you truth which will cause you triumph! And Jesus Christ will always be at the center of that triumph.
Seek truth, understand it, believe it, confess it. And the truth will become your new reality. The result will be fruitfulness in your life…..every experience will cause an addition in your life.
Think of these things. Stand against the reality which is not truth, and seek the truth that can become Godly reality in your life. This is why Jesus Christ came.
JESUS CHRIST IS THE TRUE WAY OF LIFE.
John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me.
