Speaking in tongues is the speaking in a language unknown to yourself by the power of the holy spirit within. That you believe and speak is up to you. What you speak is up to the spirit of Christ within.
Following are references to the manifestation of the spirit (erroneously referred to as a “gift” of the spirit) known as speaking in tongues found in the Bible. Comments are included, but the verses are not typed out. SIT is short for Speak In Tongues
Mark 16:17,18 Speaking in tongues is the one manifestation of the spirit not done in OT (and interpretation of tongues….which is closely aligned with prophecy).
Luke 11:9-13 The spirit is received into manifestation by asking (desiring) it.
John 20.22 He breathed in and said (thusly you shall) receive (lambano – take unto yourselves into manifestation) ye the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 SIT is an act of power and is a witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ
Acts 2:4 They (the apostles) spoke as the Spirit gave them the utterance. That you
speak is your responsibility. What you speak is the Spirit’s.
Acts 2:11 SIT is speaking the wonderful works of God.
Acts 8:18 What did Simon see? Speaking in tongues
Acts 10:46 SIT magnifies God.
Acts 19:1-7 You can’t believe what you haven’t learned, don’t know or understand
Rom 8:16,17 SIT bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, joint heirs w/ Christ

I Cor 14:2 SIT is speaking unto God. It is speaking mysteries.
I Cor 14:4 SIT edifies (builds up) the speaker, spiritually.

I Cor 14:15,16 SIT can be praying, singing, blessing
I Cor 14:17 SIT is giving thanks well.
I Cor 14:18 Paul SIT more than all these believers. Is he bragging? Or exalting the benefit of SIT?
I Cor 14:22 SIT is for a sign to the unbelievers in the gathering (church), and/but should be interpreted (by the manifestation of the spirit of interpretation of tongues) in order to edify the saints in the gathering (church)
I Cor 14:23 It is not edifying for everyone to just SIT at the same time, or without interpretation
I Cor 14:27,28 let one= “let THAT one (the one speaking in tongues) interpret”

God has given His children the ability to quiet the worldly voice of the mind, bring focus back to Himself, and exercise the new “muscle” of the power of the Holy Spirit within. Challenge yourself to speak in tongues much, and see the results for yourself.
